SCCM – Force Client to look for new advertisements

Force workstations to find new advertisements

After creating a new advertisement new systems will not be listed in the ‘Run Advertised Programs’ list until the maintenance process has ran. This usually happens every 20 minutes.

To make a new advertisement appear sooner you can manually run the maintenance process.

This following steps detail how to make a Windows 7 workstation check the SCCM server for new advertisements.

  1. Using Windows 7, Click on the ‘Start’ button (bottom left of the screen)
  2. Select ‘Control Panel’
  3. SCCM-CheckForUpdates1
  4. From the list, open ‘Configuration Manager’
  5. SCCM-CheckForUpdates2
  6. Select the ‘Actions’ tab
  7. Select ‘Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle’ and click ‘Initiate Action’
  8. SCCM-CheckForUpdates3
  9. This process will take several minutes to complete, once completed you will be able to open the ‘Run Advertised Programs’ window and see the new advertisements that apply to the workstation.

  1. How I can perform manual (force) update for “Advertised Programs” -list when “Machine policy…” initiate does nothing ? I’ve tried few other “tricks” too, but nothing seems to work.

I just can not understand how it can be possible that I have to wait 1-2 days before all programs appears to the list!

ps. I have no access or idea where the SCCM server is, I am just installing new machines on company’s network.

  2. Hey Gary – I couldn’t agree less about SCCM being a huge let down.

It’s the waiting that’s the huge killer with it- nothing happens straight away.

Also, despite investing many hours and dollars our SCCM environment has frequent issues (requiring restarting services or whole servers).

    A big bucket of p**.

  3. Whilst this seems helpful, we all know the reality, that SCCM is a pile of sh*t……..

The most unreliable pile of crap ever created for application deployment. Managesoft and Zenworks, all is forgiven.
