WordPress – How to remove /category/ from URL

By Default, WordPress adds /category/ to the base of category pages.

If the category was ‘WordPress’, this would look like www.domainname.com/category/wordpress which not only looks messy but also makes a confusing user experience, particually when the category has been included in the post URLs.

To fix this you can completely remove the category base tag so it would look like www.domainname/wordpress.

This can be done by following the steps below.

  1. Log into the WordPress admin
  2. Open the Settings -> Permalinks page
  3. Under ‘Category Base’ enter a full stop, that is
  4. .
  5. Click ‘Save Changes’
