Windows 10 – How to enable hibernate power option

By default Windows 10 offers sleep, shut down and restart power options from the start menu.

The steps below show how to enable the hibernate option. Hibernate saves the current state of the computer to the hard drive, allowing you to power off the computer and resume at a later point. It is similar to sleep – but with sleep you cannot power off the computer as the state is stored in the computer RAM.

  1. Open the Windows start menu, search for ‘Control Panel’ and open it when it appears
  2. In the search box at the top right of the window, enter ‘Power Options’
  3. Click on it when it appears
  4. In the left hand side click on the ‘Choose what power buttons do’ link

    1. Hey Joe, I havent checked these steps since the big Windows 10 update in late 2015. Are you saying that for your computer you don’t see ‘Hibernate’ as an option in step 5?

    2. Hey there. The option was completely missing from every Windows upgrade or install I tried. I figured out the solution after a few months. I had to specify the size in the powercfg command.

    3. That’s very curious, in the realm of bugginess – definitely good for others to know. I was thinking along the lines of missing drivers so windows couldnt control the ACPI features …

    4. Drivers were up-to-date. It is a curious issue. I had reported it to Microsoft when Windows 10 was first released. It boggles my mind how they don’t catch these bugs.
