Windows 10 – How to uninstall Photos app

The steps below show how to uninstall the Photos app from Windows 10.

When you uninstall the Photos app the Windows Photo Viewer will become your default image progress. If you only want to bring back the Windows Photo Veiwer for certain images check out How to bring back Windows Photo Viewer.

How to uninstall Windows 10 Photos app

  1. Close the Photos app if you currently have it open
  2. In the Cortana/Search Windows box type powershell
  3. Click on ‘Windows PowerShell’ when it appears – right click on it and choose ‘Run as Administrator’
  4. Windows10-UninstallPhotos1
  5. In the PowerShell window enter the following command (tip: copy and paste will save mistakes)
  6. Get-AppxPackage *photo* | Remove-AppxPackage
  7. Windows10-UninstallPhotos2
  8. A ‘Deployment operation progress …’ message will temporarily appear. When this goes the uninstall has finished
  9. Windows10-UninstallPhotos3
  10. The Photos app will now be gone and the Windows Photo Viewer will now be used to open your images.

  1. did it using Powershell as Admin; got the “deployment operation” prompt, and process completed.
    But Photos app is still there.
    Restarted PC, and Photos App still there.
    Repeated the powershell routine, but now I get no “deployment operation” prompt at all.
    Photos App still there; will not die.
    Stymied.

  2. My Windows 10 Video Editor’s 3D Library is glitching. Nothing fixes it. After 3 hours on the phone with a Microsoft tech person they nor their supervisors could fix it-they had never seen this glitch before, vis, the 3D images being “darkened” when I insert them into my videos. We have repaired & reset the app. Didn’t fix it. If I uninstall it, when I reinstall it, will all of my photos I have used in the program be lost? It seems they’re stored in it, ie, previous videos I’ve produced. Thank you so much. Michael
