The steps below show how to uninstall the Photos app from Windows 10.
When you uninstall the Photos app the Windows Photo Viewer will become your default image progress. If you only want to bring back the Windows Photo Veiwer for certain images check out How to bring back Windows Photo Viewer.
How to uninstall Windows 10 Photos app
- Close the Photos app if you currently have it open
- In the Cortana/Search Windows box type powershell
- Click on ‘Windows PowerShell’ when it appears – right click on it and choose ‘Run as Administrator’
- In the PowerShell window enter the following command (tip: copy and paste will save mistakes)
-
Get-AppxPackage *photo* | Remove-AppxPackage
- A ‘Deployment operation progress …’ message will temporarily appear. When this goes the uninstall has finished
- The Photos app will now be gone and the Windows Photo Viewer will now be used to open your images.

Hey minx – it’s still working for me on Windows 10 Home – Version 2004 – OS build 19041.450.
You no doubt did – but make sure you’re running PowerShell as administrator and copy-and-paste the command.
too complicated for me…I am buying apple next time
Good luck even knowing how to unlock it LOL
Thanks so much! Finally I got rid of this useless app
thanks a lot, this app annoyed me so much
Great tip!
By the time you wrote this you could’ve typed it manually 100 times….
Thanks a lot!
This doesn’t work. Tried 3 or 4 times carefully.
There is no COPY and PASTE in my Powershell !
Sounds like you noticed that the keyboard command Ctrl + V doesn’t work in the command window – you need to right click and choose ‘Paste’ instead.
Tried ALL ways to copy and paste. Simply does not work in Powershell on my desktop Windows 10. But thank you for responding.
