Windows 8 – How to disable the start menu opening on log on

By default, when you log on to a Windows 8 computer the start menu will launch. In previous versions of Windows only the desktop was shown.

Since the launch of Windows 8.1 there’s been an option to change this to the previous behavior. The steps below detail where to find this option and how to change it:

  1. Click the start button then start typing ‘taskbar and navigation’
  2. Click on ‘Taskbar and Navigation’ when it appears below
  3. Windows8-LogonStart1
  4. Click on the ‘Navigation’ tab
  5. Under ‘Start screen’ place a tick next to ‘When i sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the deskop’
  6. Windows8-LogonStart2
  7. Click ‘OK’ to save the changes.
